The violin is made from a variety of light woods including Maple, Spruce, Ebony, Boxwood, Willow and Rosewood. Normally the back, neck, ribs and scroll of the violin is made from Maple. The top, linings and the blocks are made from Spruce. Since Ebony is the strongest of all the light woods, it is used to make the fingerboard, pegs, tailpiece, and the end pin on the violin. Some makers substitute Boxwood for Ebony because Boxwood is more abundant and Ebony can be difficult to find. The North American Broad Leaf Maple is one of the most popular woods used among violin makers at the present time. This wood produces a good quality of sound, especially if it is properly aged which may add to the tonal quality of the violin.
