How many tons of coal was exported to the US from Australia?
Report

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The link below contains the latest coal importing figures from the U.S Energy Information Association by country of origin for years 2003 - 2009 with 2010 predictions
http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/coal/quarterly/html/t7p01p1.html

It's actually not much in terms of total coal imported, only 58.48 ( thousand short tons ) for 2009.
The Australian Coal Association doesn't even list the US as a separate country of export...

Is the US coal independant?

In a way.... because the US is one of the largest producers and also exporters of coal in the world. As with oil, the US is also a great consumer of coal. The thing is that Australia in particular, is not one of the top coal export providers to the US.

I believe my Answer to a similar Question (that mysteriously was not sent to voting) supports the assertion that there is not much exported coal from Australia to the US...

http://www.mahalo.com/answers/business/which-countries-does-australia-export-coal

60% of all Australian coal exports go to Japan, then in a smaller proportion, to other countries like South Korea, India, Taiwan, China or Brazil. The US is nowhere to be seeing in that segment.

sorry for the slow comment back...

indeed the main Australian market for coal is Japan and Asia - Asia is Australia's biggest market for most commodities such as iron ore and coal....
