How many stars are there in the Milky Way?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

"The Milky Way galaxy has a whopping circumference of roughly 250-300 thousand light years! Within the main body of the Milky Way there are estimated to be between 200 and 400 billion stars. The Earth’s solar system is believed to exist very close to the Galaxy’s galactic plane, due to the fact that the Milky Way essentially divides the night sky into two virtually equal hemispheres."

What is the validity of that website used as the source? NASA says there is only 100 billion, and that is a government controlled operation...
The number seems to be correct... that is 400 billion stars.
That estimate has a floating variable of +/-200 billion in the number. When most declared that the Milky Way has 100 billion stars, they are in fact referring to the number of stars that has been survey so far... but did not count the remaining 300 billion that we haven studied yet.
Here the link to support the assertion:
