How many staff members does MAHALO have? Who are they?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Mahalo has less than 70 staff members, 40 of which work out of its corporate headquarters in California. According to the article, Mahalo recently laid off some staff. So, I'd say it's anywhere between 50 and 70 employees, some of which are independent from Mahalo. We can't possibly list them all, but here is a sampling of employees that work at Mahalo. You can find these people by researching Linkedin.

Ryan Scott, Investor

Jason Calacanis, CEO

Mark Jeffrey, CTO

Eric Stephens, Director of Product and User Experience

Christopher Miller, Lead Developer

Ray Slakinski, Lead Architect

Christopher Finke, Software Engineer

Tyler Crowley, Director of Marketing / Strategy / Corp Dev

Elliot C.R. Cook, VP Operations

Daryn Shaw, Lead Guide

Jeff Lauras, Writer, web content manager

Karen Lane, Senior Remote Guide

Evan Danielson, Video Games Guide Lead

Ken Bothe, Web Content Manager

Jules Korngold, Search Guide

Ben Lauter, Freelance writer/researcher

Lon Hariss, Lead Guide

Jonathan Harris, Guide Lead

Leah D'Emilio, Host/Executive Producer

Andrew Kaufman, Editorial Director

Sean Jackson, Senior Software Developer / Designer

Andrew Dobrow, Remote Full Time Guide at Mahalo

Jonathan Moncrief, Guide Mahalo Sports

Jeff Hoard, Full Time Guide at Mahalo

Right now under 40 f/t folks plus a bunch of remote freelancers. We had some layoffs to get in line with the reality of the market, but to be honest the freelance model have proven out to be the big winner over our first 18 or so months.

At this point I would be happy to never add another person in the office, but rather have 1,000 folks working 10-20 hours a month in Answers building out our service. The future is a lot of folks doing a little bit of work each I think.

Of course, who knows... we're figuring everything out. Right now we've got a solid base production system for the search engine part of Mahalo but the growth in the mid-term is going to be with Mahalo Answers we think. Clearly a wonderful community is growing here--we just need more questions.

We have a feature coming money that will really jump start the number of questions we think. :-)

About 40 people work out of our headquarters in Santa Monica. That includes the editorial team (of which I am a member), the Mahalo Daily team, developers, management and craft services. In addition, about 40 consultants and freelancers from all around the world help us build and maintain our database.

Not 100% positive what you mean by the "who are they?" part. A list of specific names? Not really sure how everyone would feel about that, so I'll refrain, but my name is Lon and I run the News Dept. and work on the Daily podcast.

All of us are on Answers, and have profile pages, if you want to know more about us. Many of us on the editorial side have not worked at a start-up before Mahalo, and were previously involved in journalism or creative writing or the entertainment industry. Or, in my case, we worked retail!
