Infection is generally recognized when you pass segments of a tapeworm in the stool, especially if the segment is moving. You should be able to see it in his feces, or you can bring a sample to his doctor to be tested. It would look like a white worm. Tapeworms are treated with oral medications, usually in a single dose. You can read more about tapeworm here
