How many scrapbook pages should there be in an album?

I don't want to make my scrapbook album too big but I want to make sure I cover everything in my kids younger years. How do I find out what the average number of pages in an album should be? Is there a scrapbooking advice blog or forum I can visit?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I have a site scrapbook-advice.com that I visit - there is a page on albums that may help also. http://www.scrapbook-advice.com/Scrapbook-Photo-Album.html

Personally I have some albums as thick as 4 inches. but I can't tell you how many pages as the thickness of the pages is also dictated by the amount of photo mattes and other embellishments the pages have. Strap hinge albums will hold more but that depends on the length of the straps. Ring Binders are of course limited to pages that will fill up the rings, just like any 3-ring notebook. Post binders can have extension posts added as you add pages and the necessary spacers between pages - say a spacer between every 5 new pages to accommodate for the page thickness so your book will close flat. Several posts screwed together can also be a little unstable.

Basically, the more pages the heavier. Also think about who will be handling the books. Children are not going to be as careful as adults, but then I have a tough time with my really big thick books just moving them from their storage spot to look at them. I generally don't like to go more than 2 inches thick at the spine.

If the album is a themed album - say a particular vacation, then you will be limited by the number of photos and they layouts you will use for those. If it's a chronological album then space and size would dictated.

I probably have about 50 albums, but not one with only the 10 pages that they traditionally come with. Ten is not enough for me as I take tons of photos at every event and am always buying extra page protectors.

Hope this helps.
Lynne
