As of 2010, nine United States presidents did not complete their full term. Some had finished a full term before not finishing a subsequent term, but their are nine that were in the middle of a term when they died or left office. Only one president resigned and left early alive, that is Richard Nixon.
Four presidents were assassinated. Garfield, McKinley, Lincoln, and Kennedy were all shot while in office. McKinley and Lincoln were both killed during their second terms while Garfield and Kennedy were both in their first term as president. Warren G. Harding died of a heart attack during his first term. William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia during his first term. Zachary Taylor died of acute gastroenteritis during his first term and Franklin D. Roosevelt died of a cerebral hemorrhage in his fourth term. FDR was the only four term president.
