How many people will follow me on Twitter (twitter.com/s7acker) when there's $100 Mahalo Dollars up for grabs?

This is a genuine piece of research for a book I've been commissioned to write. $100 Mahalo Dollars to the answerer closest to the correct number, who also follows me on Twitter between now and Midnight on Christmas Eve (Greenwich Mean Time)

I should just add that no identifiers or personal information will be published and my personal contact details are available to anyone who feels the need to ask.
Tip for best answer: M$100.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

23 new followers, unless you fish for followers which might make the number much higher :)

But I'm not in the running for the Mahalo money since I'm not going to follow. I follow too many already. Now... if you're going to provide /content/ via Twitter. That's an incentive. ;)

One problem: questions on Mahalo are only open for three days! You won't be able to pay the person with this question! (i guess you could start another question or direct pay the person... yeah, direct question them down the road!)

from our Help section http://www.mahalo.com/answers/help

How are best answers selected?
The asker has three days from the time the question is asked to select a best answer by clicking the Select as Best Answer button next to the answer they choose. If the asker doesn't select a best answer within three days, the question moves to the undecided questions tab and the community votes for the best answer. At the end of the voting period, which lasts two days, the answer with the most votes is declared the best answer and receives the tip if a tip was offered. If there's a tie or no best answer has the most votes, the question is closed without a best answer and if a tip was offered the the tip is credited to the asker's account.

I think you will get 35 folks from here to follow you--most folks don't have a Twitter account.

Thanks Jason - I realised my error just as the 'edit window' clicked past 60 minutes!

I'll select the answer that guesses closest to the number of followers, one hour before the 3 day period expires. If there's more than one correct answer, I'll divide the $ equally among the correct answerers. I think it's pretty clear that this was very much a spur of the moment exercise, rather than a well thought out plan!

I don't see how you can award this question. Questions expire in 3 days (on the 19th). If you don't award the tip by that point, people will vote on the best answer. However, it's an interesting experiment and I hope it works out for you.

Right. Based on the fact that the question will expire 3 days from when I set it, the $100 will be awarded 1 hour before the question expires. One important fact has already been gleaned from this exercise: I am an idiot!

Unless you have something valuable to say on twitter, you will end up followed only by the winner. So this is a good experiment but only worth as an experiment and nothing else:)

Judging by the immediate reaction to most of the responses above, they believe it's going to be a low number. Due to this, statistically the people who come afterward are going to use statistically low numbers (people love to choose the same answer, even if it's wrong), so we'll probably see a whole lot of "Oh, I don't see a whole lot of people doing this. My guess is xxx" and the number will be very low. Whereas the drive for monetary gain is much stronger than we give it credit for, so the actual response will be higher than initially expected, I would imagine. Although by stating these statistics I have in turn altered them. Yay me. :)

I'm going to venture my guess on that in fact a jump in followers will occur simply on the hope of receiving a reward whereas the actual that stick around will be very small.

Surge followers : 173
Staying followers : Less than 20

Mind you, I won't be following you on Twitter myself as I don't use the site. I have far too many "social networking" sites to worry about as is. :) Have fun with your experiment.

:-) Maybe I should change the question to How many people will follow me on Twitter (twitter.com/s7acker) when there's $100 Mahalo Dollars up for grabs, despite the fact that I've given the game away about it being an experiment?

Hmmm...me and my big mouth!

akuta's Avatar

Heh heh. That you have, although the hopes of getting the answer right may indeed get you enough followers. The real culprit will be how long you decide to do the experiment and when you choose to "select the right answer". Most Mahalo questions that I've kept an eye on have closed within the first day. this would definitely put a damper on the potential of your experiment. :)

not many usually the prizes have to be higher not exactly in price but desirability..ie Mahalo dollars might not be all that it is..considering that $100 iTunes might be more valuable as far as desirability

I think the one person that gets the M$100 will follow you on twitter (at least for a while) and then everyone else will drop you since they aren't getting anything out of it.

If you are asking how many people will temporarily follow you in the hopes of getting the M$100 I predict less than 50.

btw: I am SSharon27 on twitter

I'm nowhere near interesting enough to expect people to stick around!

Nit Pick 1: you wrote: "I should just add that no identifiers or personal information will be published..."

WTF is this page? http://twitter.com/s7acker/followers

the nature of following someone on twitter "publishes" one's "identifier." Obviously, I don't care, as I'm now following you.

Nit Pick 2: What number are you looking for? Your question asks "How many people will follow me on Twitter" Here are three reasonable interpretations: 1) total followers 2) new followers since you posted your question 3) new followers since you posted your question who answered this question.

Also, are you playing "Exact answer only" "Price is Right Rules closest without going over" or "closest?"

Anyhow, good luck with your experiment, and your book.
