The City of New Orleans estimated in 2004 that there were around 50 million people living within 500 miles of the city, which has most likely stayed around the same over the last few years, give or take a couple of million.

Walrus, thanks for your effort, but I needed a more current official answer, as there has been much population shifting since 2004, both due to Katrina's impacts and due just to time. I needed this answer tonight, and as it is now late I am cancelling the question. Regardless, good effort on your part, and the only one at that, so thanks on both counts.

Great answer. I don't know where the city got the information, and I don't trust them an inch, but still it's an official source of sorts. It's an odd question because what does it matter? 500 miles is a long way. Taking a cruise is probably about the only reason one would want to know. Both the city and the cruise location got clobbered by Katrina; but, the popution shift was probably all within a 500 mile radius. The cruise ships are coming back slowly.
