Thank you for your question! As of the 2006 U.S. Census, Chicago Illinois has a population of 2,833,321 residents. This is just under a quarter of the population of the entire state of Illinois. The population has decreased a total of 2.2 percent since 2000. The city consists of 227 square miles and has an average of 12,750.5 residents per square mile. The metro region of Chicago includes over 9 million residents. Nationally Chicago is the 3rd most populated city in the United States, trailing New York City which has 8,008,278 residents, and Los Angeles whose population is 3,694,820. Chicago had been the second largest city in the U.S. behind New York for most of the 18th and 19th centuries. It wasn’t until the 1980’s when Chicago’s population was declining, and Los Angeles was growing at a rapid rate, that Los Angeles over took Chicago as the second largest city in the nation. In the 1940’s Chicago’s population had nearly half a million more residents then they do today.
