Thousands of companies and employment firms advertise legitimate job openings on employment web sites like Monster.com and Indeed.com. While there are a lot of openings posted and people hired from the big employment web sites, the vast majority of people who apply on those sites don’t get the positions for which they apply.
To understand why, think of Monster.com as being an enormous job fair. Thousands of companies post tens of thousands of job openings for which millions of people apply, owing to Monster.com’s popularity. Most of those people will not get hired not because they are not talented but because they were not exactly what the employer wanted. The employer had an enormous pool of potential applicants and could choose his ideal employee from that huge group. Millions of people apply for jobs on Monster.com but only several thousand will actually find employment there.
Employers from every business niche post openings on Monster.com. Almost every career you can think of has openings that are posted there.
As a final note, if you want to apply with a company online, you are far better off applying with a company which posts an ad on Craig’s List. Because it doesn’t have a reputation for being a job seeking web site, most people don’t think to place applications with companies who advertise there. This is good in that there is a lot less competition for jobs on Craig’s List.
