How many Orcas (killer whales) are in captivity and how did they get there?

Some folks say the orcas in captivity are rescued, others say they are captured.

What's the true story, and how many are in captivity?

Note: Orca's are not whales. They are dolphins, albeit big ones.

I have been lucky to see both orcas and dolphins in the wild. There is nothing more spectacular than seeing them do their own thing... out in the open ocean.

You couldn't pay me enough to watch them jump through hoops!

This is what I read. There are about 49 captive whales in capivity right now. It says that it is really hard to keep track of them because some aqauriums hide them until they are trained. It is also hard to keep track of the aqaurium births also because they like to make sure the babies will survive so the public does not hear about them.

They are captured by fishermen locating a school of them out at sea. Once they are located the fishermens boats emit loud noises into the water confusing the echolocation ability of the dolphins and throws them into a panic. Thats when the fishermen use their nets and boats to cut off the dolphins escape route. The dolphins are then slowly herded toward the fishing port. The dolphins are then captured at shore.

It is unsure how many there are in captivity around the world. The other answer of 47 is just from Wikipedia and is out-dated to the 90s. There has been a rise in the amount of these animals captured around the world and it is impossible to find out exactly how many there are but it is estimated to be around 60-70. These animals are only legally allowed to be 'imprisoned' with a license, there are 45 alone in the US at the moment and another 23 around the world, but there are thought to be many illegally captivated.

I see only one answer to this question and that would be TO MANY.
To keep these creatures in tanks for our entertainment is just wrong!
I can understand keeping them in captivity for rehabilitation purposes or maybe a
breeding program to insure populations in the future but to be held captive and
paraded around for profits I see this as wrong. If they did not draw the crowds they do
they would have to be released.

However, in places like Sea World who also do SO MUCH for conservation, where do you think the money comes from to be able to go rescue penguins, whales, and sea lions?

Some estimates vary on how many are in captivity, but the number is in the low to mid 40's. Sometimes when Orca are moved from one Aquarium or water park to another, they are renamed, causing confusion.

Some were captured wild, others were born in captivity, though this number is low. Orca have more than the normal amount of issues with mating and such in captivity. Like other rare animals in captivity, newborn calves are sometimes traded to other parks, or moved about. Some orca have spent most of their lives traveling from park to park, in an effort to improve captive breeding results.

Some of the movements of captive orca have been rescues from failing waterparks, others have been rescued after stranding on a beach. Some, to the shame of mankind, have been forced to strand on a beach, then "Rescued" only to be sold into captivity.
