how many miles per hour maximum does the TGV train travel in France?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

In regular service, the TGV travels at speeds up to 200 mph. However, it can only do so on the lines that have been built exclusively for the TGV. The number of these lines has steadily grown since the first one was completed in 1981, from Paris to Lyon. When the train travels on regular lines, its speed is the same as that of conventional trains.

The record is 574.8 km/h (357 mph), but that was on a specially modified train (all but two coaches removed, along with the emergency brakes and the passengers) and it was just a test run. If they tried to go that fast normally, not only would there be no passengers, but the motor would tear up.

The trains typically go 320 km/h (200 mph).

Other facts you don't know about the TGV:
-It stands for "Train à Grande Vitesse," French for "high-speed train."
-It's properly pronounced "Tay Zhay Vay."
-It links with Switzerland, as well as the Thalys network in Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, and the Eurostar network in France, Belgium and the UK.
