How many islands in hawaii?

There are 8 major island
Hawaii (commonly called The Big Island)
Maui
Kaho'olawe (unpopulated due to military bombardments)
Molokai
Lanai
Oahu
Kauai
Niihau
Then you have 10 "lesser islands" which are mainly used as wildlife sanctuaries.
Then you have all of the itty bitty spits of land that include shoals, atols - you get the grand total number of 137.
Midway Island is NOT part of that count as it is only a territory of the US and not administered by the State of Hawaii.
