Hurricanes have probably been hitting land since the oceans warmed up at the end of the last "snowball Earth" episode over 600 million years ago. In recent years, there have been an average of about 45 tropical cyclones of hurricane strength worldwide per year.

http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/E10.html

From 1851 to 2006, 284 hurricanes made landfall in the US, an average of about 1.8 per year. The average number of Atlantic hurricanes per year is 6.2, so roughly 30% of Atlantic hurricanes eventually make landfall.

The five costliest hurricanes have been:

1. Katrina (2005), $81.0 billion
2. Andrew (1992), $35.0 billion
3. Wilma (2005), $20.6 billion
4. Ike (2008), $18.0 billion
5. Charley (2004), $14 billion

In terms of a "what-if" scenario, if the "Great Miami Hurricane" of 1926 were to repeat itself today, the estimated damage would be at least $157 billion.
