How many Friday the 13ths have there been since the current calendar was put in place?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Our current calender is the Gregorian calendar, and since the time of its inception there have been about 735 Friday the 13th's. It is difficult to calculate accurately on such short notice, but I can do so if necessary. I may do so just for fun.

I went back and counted, and it turns out my figure was accurate. Today is the 733rd Friday the 13th since the Gregorian calendar was adopted in 1582. The Gregorian calendar is a 400 year cycle, and there are 688 Friday the 13th's every 400 years in that cycle. I counted from 1982 to today's date, and then I added 688. I took into account the month of the year that the new cycle started.

There will be 2 more Friday the 13th's this calendar year, and that's where my 735 figure came from.

Hold on. The question says "since the current calendar was put in place". That varies according to where you live. Almost everyone on this site seems to be American, British, or assorted other ex-British colonies. Because Britain was Protestant and didn't like being told to change their calendar by a Pope, the current calendar did not get put in place in our countries until much later. Britain and it's colonies adopted the new calendar Sept 14, 1752. And if you live in Alaska the adoption was in 18 October 1867 . So the calculations are more complex.

What's your source for there being 735?

Math. Wikipedia told me the occurrence, on average, of Friday the 13th's per year. I calculated that from the end of 1582 to the current date to get my answer.

I'm going to assume that by "current calendar" you mean the one designed by Numa Pompelius and then fully finished by Julius Caesar in the year 46 B.C. Assuming he made at the beginning of the year, then 2055 years have passed since then and 2008. Since, days go in a 28-year cycle because of the leap year, then you figure out how many Friday the 13ths occur in 28 years, which is 48. Divide 2055 years by 28 and multiply by 48 and you get about 3522 Friday the 13ths. Then you use this year's Friday the 13th and add 1 to get 3523.

This answer makes just as much sense as any. Which isn't saying much, actually. Why does the current calendar matter more than the older calendar?
