How many e-mail addresses are there?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

RFC5322 limits the first part of an e-mail address to 64 characters, and the second (domain) part to 255 characters. I'm sure the math works out to be something very big, but there are practically an infinite number.

I have three different ones, if that helps.

Let's see if I can get this right. Email and domain addresses are not case sensitive. RFC 5322 states that the part before the @ can be up to 64 characters, though not all email servers support that. Domain names can be up to 255 characters.

I will not count International Domain Names, so this will tell you how many non International email addresses there are.

64^56 + 255^37
The 255^37 is because there are 26 letters in the alphabet, plus 0-9 in numbers, and a single dash is allowed as well.

The part before the @ is much harder, since an absurd amount of characters are allowed.

Uppercase and lowercase English letters (a-z, A-Z)
Digits 0 through 9
Characters ! # $ % & ' * + - / = ? ^ _ ` { | } ~
Character . provided that it is not the first nor last character, nor may it appear two or more times consecutively.

Worse, you can even use a huge number of other characters, as long a you quote them (ie: "John Doe"@example.com).

I count 56 base valid characters, so 64^56.

(64^56) + (255^37)

It is a huge number, larger than is easy to comprehend. More or less, infinite.
