At one time the study of Botany had included all organisms that weren’t considered part of the animal kingdom. These types of organisms included the following:
Fungi: Which is now studied at length in Mycology
Bacteria: Now studied at length in Microbiology
Viruses: Also now studied more at length in Microbiology
Algae: Now studied at length in Pycology.
Then of course there is the study of any and all plant life, which is now the main focus of study in Botany. Although the above organisms are no longer clustered in the plant life kingdom category they are still part of the study of Botany in the introduction courses of this field of study.
