How many different breeds of dogs are there?
Are there any good books that discuss the various dog breeds? Are wolves related to any modern dog breeds?

There are currently over 160 dog breeds, not counting designer breeds like the labradoodle and puggle.
The list on Wikipedia is quite extensive but gives you the name of the dog, the country of origin and their classification in the following registries: FCI, AKC, ANKC, CKC, KC, NZKC and UKC. There is also a photo of a good example of the breed next to their information.
The same page on Wikipedia also has links to extinct dog breeds and hypoallergenic dog breeds.

Scientific analysis has recently proven the theory that dogs are the descendents of the wolf. The theory used to be that dogs were descendents of the wolf, jackal and coyote but the jackal and the coyote have been taken out of the equation.
