How many different adult magazines were there circa 1990?
Looking for some kind of documented answer; not a guess! Bonus tip of $3.00 if you can find the number of straight adult magazines vs. gay adult magazines.
NOTE: I'd accept as best answer if you found stats on the number of adult magazines for any year between 1970 and 1995.

After extensive search in the Internet, I just found a list of Adult Magazines, which is marketed to heterosexual men, gay & bisexual men, and heterosexual women, with some items having the year of publications. Hope this helps.

Edward, thanks for finding SOMETHING on this - I had tried and come up with nothing. This site at least got me thinking in some other directions and - while not finding THE answer - I did find some things that might move the ball downfield.
First off, it appears that if anyone has found the answer to this question, it would be Michael Kimmel, a New York sociologist who can be found at www.michaelkimmel.com . He has written books and published collections of essays on men and masculinity, In this "The Gender of Desire...", the sixth essay tackles "an aggregate empirical analysis of pornography and rape" and includes charts showing a significant drop in circulation of the leading men' magazines in the years leading up to your target year of 1990. (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=m1mM0m37AHkC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_v2_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q=&f=false) (go to p.117) I would guess that there is a correlation between the drop in circulation and a drop in surviving titles, and I would also guess that homosexual adult magazines may have been on the increase during the same period that "heterosexual" adult magazines were decreasing.
Here also, is a link to (selected pages of) his recent book "Handbook of Studies on Men and Masculinities", which includes quite a list of references (p.10): http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=UvAZD45BMDoC&oi=fnd&pg=PA1&dq=%22Kimmel%22+%22Handbook+of+studies+on+men+%26+masculinities%22+&ots=UIn5UGOKWo&sig=xYbgAjq230_f7pRg0EV9LYiRhAw#v=onepage&q=&f=false
The National Organization for Men Against Sexism (no mas - clever) may also be a resource: www.nomas.org.
From a couple of the other questions you've asked, spiffyland, it looks like you're working on an interesting paper. I think I would take a chance on dropping an e-mail with your question to Kimmel and that organization, along with a little bit about your topic. They might have the answer. Anyway, I hope this gives you some worthwhile info, even if it doesn't lead you to the specific bit of info - which seems like it could be hard-to-find. (Hey, have you thought about trying to get anecdotal info from someone who has spent the last 20+ years working at an adult bookstore? Might get some really interesting insights from your local pornseller! Seriously.)
P.S. Anyone else find it humorous that that Obama magazine is in the foreground of that picture of tattoo and adult mags??? Edward, did you photoshop that in? ;-)
I did not photoshop Obama magazine, its just was really there.
Thanks. Amusing that this list is on an astronomy website! This is helpful, though doesn't quite fully reach my needs. Here's a $1.00 tip to express my gratitude.
Thanks for the tip.
