How many designer suits should a man have?
Should a man have at least three designer suits in his closet? How do you mix and match your business suit attire to maximize your outfits for the week? Is there a website that offers advice on putting suits and ties together?

The source I've included below says that as few as three suits are necessary. I've heard five suits recommended before as well; one for each business day of the week, and I think that makes a little more sense if you wear suits to work. If you only wear suits sporadically, you can probably get away with just one or two.
Mixing and matching is a more complicated discussion when you get into dress shirts and ties, but I think dark suits give you more matching options in general than a gray one would. I also disagree with the first source below in regards to their positive comments about gray. I tried on four gray suits last week and I couldn't stand any of them - it's black and navy for me! My second link below provides some advice about matching ties to your outfit.
