Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

0 days. 8 nights. Each night, you light the center candle. The first night, you light the center candle and the first candle. The second night, you light the center candle, and the first and second candles. The third, center + first, second, third. Etc.

Unlike the biblical miracle flames for which the tradition is celebrated, these candles are not expected to last forever. You let them burn themselves down each night, and put new ones in the Menorrah the next night.

Thanks for the answer, mritty. Just to clarify, though, the "center candle" is called the "Shamas" and is not necessarily in the center. Many menorahs (Hanukkiyahs) have it on one side or the other.

Also, as one of my kids pointed out this a.m., there is frequently confusion on when Hanukkah starts. Many calendars list the "First Day" - this year on Saturday the 12th; however, Hanukkah actually starts at sundown - this year on Friday the 11th. Some calendars do reflect the 11th as being the "First Night" (On Friday, one of my kid's non-Jewish friends apparently saw the need to try to argue with not one, but two, Jewish kids about when it was going to start.)

If this is not a trick question, then the answer is 8.

However, the candles are not lit at all during the day, only at night, so your question possible has the answer "zero".

The reference below explains the Channukah candle traditional sequence.

Ahh, nice. That article clarifies that "first" in my answer means "right". Jewish, Hebrew, right-to-left. Yup. :-)
