How many colleges are in the US?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hello there, @eug372!

I don't know how accurate and updated the information Wikipedia has but according to UNESCO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higher_education_in_the_United_States), "US has the second largest number of higher education institutions in the world, with a total of 5,758, an average of more than 115 per state." However, according to BrainTrack, there are over ‘7,000 higher education institutions (colleges and universities) in the U.S. with over 15 million students according to US Department of Education statistics.’

When it comes to education, undeniably United States has been the top country to have the many prestigious schools around the world. That is why many international students, professors and researchers are going there to pursue the most advanced education. Btw, you can get the list of the “U.S. Universities by state” at http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ/state/.

According to the Director of the US Department of Education, there are a total of 4,505 higher education institutions in the United States today. This figure includes all solely online schools, all brick and mortar schools, and schools that are a hybrid of the two learning formats. This number is soon subject to diminish as new legislation that will take effect on January 1, 2011 will force many of these schools to close or to merge with other universities. The bill is called the Employee Education Act, which indicates that colleges and universities that charge high tuition and does not enable students to really get their dollars worth in employment opportunities will not be eligible for federal funds. In short, if students are not getting what they pay for in term of employability, then the assumption of deceptive advertising and practice is in play. The Director has defended the bill stating that thousands of students are paying for degrees from schools that promise good employment opportunities, but when the students apply for positions they find out that the degree is not worth very much.
