How many classes of French do I need to learn to be considered as being fluent?

Do I need to actually live in France for a while too?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The number of classes necessary can range from zero to infinity. Fluency is immeasurable by mathematical calculations of classes taken or how long you've lived in a French speaking country/province. One common definition states that one is fluent when they are “able to speak or write smoothly, easily, or readily.” (Dictionary.com) In that case you are considered fluent if you are able to speak or write in a language with minimal difficulty or pause. That being said, classes are a great way to start learning a language or to develop your knowledge of the language further. Schools, specialty language learning classes at community colleges/universities, or even language learning software can be a great resource and teaching tool for learning another language. Programs, such as Rosetta Stone, specialize in teaching languages through the comfort of your own home via computer software.

But the most important rule of becoming fluent in a language is this, Practice, Practice, Practice! To be good at anything you have to practice and study until it becomes second nature, which is what fluency means! Although it does help to live or spend time in a place where they speak the language, it is not necessary, so no need to pack your bags just yet. Just keep trying at the language until you can speak smoothly, easily, and readily, which could take years and many classes or maybe not too many, depending on your ability to learn quickly and accurately. Overall, the time it takes to reach fluency varies dramatically but it can be done and is done every day through practice.

Bonne chance! Good Luck!

There is no number of classes that will make you fluent in French, nor will it matter whether you spend time in France. Being fluent means that you can easily speak and understand the language. When you can have full conversations in French without any hindrances, you'll know you are well on your way. If you think you need more practice, try having a friend help you. Preferably a friend who is also french speaking. Make some flashcards, speak French in your everyday life. Name things as you see them. It sounds silly but it really helps. You may also try to join chat rooms online where others are speaking French. This will help you to better understand the language as well as to see how it is written.
