This is a great question, and surprisingly the answer is that nearly every city in California – and there are around 480 of them - is within an hour of the state’s 352 mountain ranges – be that the Klamath Mountains in the north, the sweeping Shasta Cascades, the mountain ranges that straddle California’s stunning Central Coast or the 400 mile long Sierra Nevada Mountain Range that’s home to three of the state’s national parks: Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon. California’s remarkable terrain provides for numerous elevation changes as you traverse the state, from the towering 14,494 ft peak of Mount Whitney to the sun parched salt flats of the Badwater Basin in Death Valley which lie at a remarkable 282 feet below sea level:

The above world atlas map shows the main mountain ranges though there are a number of smaller mountain ranges like the Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mountains that overlook the city of Los Angeles with the San Bernardino Mountains to the east and the San Jacinto Mountains to the south-east.

As at 1/1/2010 the City of Merced lists its city population at 80,985 and the county population as 258,495 (Source: State of California, Department of Finance, E-5 Population and Housing Estimates for Cities, Counties and the State, 2001-2010, with 2000 Benchmark. Sacramento, California, May 2010). The city covers an area of 19.9 square miles.

You can find out more about Merced by visiting the city website at: http://www.cityofmerced.org/about/default.asp or the Merced CVB website: http://www.yosemite-gateway.org/

The closest ocean beach to Merced – though this is subject to interpretation – is Manresa State Beach: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=545
