Jane Austen, the English novelist, did not receive any acclaim during her lifetime for her publications. Born in 1775 in Hampshire, England, Austen was the daughter of a member of the clergy, and as such, had access to her father's formidable library. She gathered information about the world outside of her own experiences from the library and from her five brothers. Two of Austen's brothers were officers in the Royal Navy and related their observations to her. She also had a brother that was adopted by wealthy cousins, and as heir, inherited their estate in Kent giving Jane and her only sister the opportunity to live the life of the privileged when they visited him. Her brother Henry lived in London and when she visited him she attended a number of social events, as well as taking in the museums and theaters which provided backgrounds and events in her stories.
Jane Austin died on July 18, 1817, and it was in December of the same year that her novels "Northanger Abbey" and "Persuasion" were published together by her brother Henry. As a biographical note, Henry released the information that Jane Austen was the author of the four novels, "Sense and Sensibility", "Pride and Prejudice", "Emma" and "Mansfield Park".
She wrote six novels:
*Sense and Sensibility
*Pride and Prejudice
*Northanger Abbey
*Mansfield Park
*Emma
*Persuasion
Based on that information, it's fair to say that Jane Austen was not considered a great writer during her lifetime. In fact, it wasn't until after her death that she was even given credit for writing the novels.
