how many bears are killed on average each year in the US? Need statictics on bear hunting

I am working on a project and would like to know how many bears are killed (by hunting) each year in the US. If you are unable to find data for the whole US, if you could find any other statistics that have to do with bear hunting that would be great!
Thanks,
Daniel

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi Daniel!

This is one big complicated question!
I am assuming that you're talking about the Black Bear and Brown Bear within the United States.

Grizzly's are hunted in Alaska and Wyoming. I thought they were protecting in Wyoming, but I just read news at this link which shows otherwise.
http://wolves.wordpress.com/2007/10/16/wyoming-hunters-kill-4-grizzly-bears-all-related-to-elk-hunting/

When it comes to hunting statistics, it usually depends on each individual state. Then you have to think of just the states that have populations of bear and have hunting seasons. Bears are found in 32 US states, but I found a list of states for bear hunting at world class outdoors.
http://www.worldclassoutdoors.com/bear_hunting.htm

South Carolina had a record year in 2003 with 55 bears. This is reported by Game & Fish which is a magazine.
http://www.scgameandfish.com/hunting/big-game-hunting/sc_aa104804a/

What you'll need to do is look up these nine states Alaska, California, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming for better statistics.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service does a hunting survey every 5 years.
http://www.fws.gov/hunting/huntstat.html
The last report was done in 2006. They are state specific, so I would look up the report for the nine states I listed above.

I also found a pdf article from bearbiology.com that covers the "potential effects of sport hunting on California black bears" it's only 4 pages and has lots of information.
http://www.bearbiology.com/fileadmin/tpl/Downloads/URSUS/Vol_9/Burton_Koch_Updike_Brody_Vol_9.pdf

Good luck on your project. Let me know if I can help you any more.

According to the most recently available data more than 1,800 bears are killed each spring. This is compiled from about 28 states.

You can also find more detailed information, such as demographics, on the 399 thousand bear hunters by reading some information on the US fish and wildlife site.

Hello,

Let me answer this question based on my experience as a outfitter. Here it how this works in my country, Romania. Every year in September, our Minister of Agriculture, sets a number of bears that can be hunted in our country. The number is based on the statistical data received during the year. Obviously, a balance must be kept.

Based on this number, every hunting agency receives a "recoltation quota" . Example. for 2008, 600 bears/season. We have 100 hunting agencies, and therefore, there will be 6 bears/agency. But, some agencies don't have the possibility to hunt them, or they have bad areas to hunt them. So, the number will be split again...and so on. Some agencies can provide more bears, some can't...

I also have some contracts in Africa, and I tell you for sure this is how they work too, for big species (elephants and so on)

I am talking about URSUS ARCTOS ( brown bear). Here are some numbers :

2001-2002 -567/year
2002-2003 - 607/year
2003-2004 - 658/year
2009-2010 - 688/year.

Obviously, some rules apply. No females, no cubs. Sick exemplares have priority.
As I said, there are several major factors to be considered. Another interesting fact is that an outfitter can shot a bear if it's wounded. But this doesn't count as a hunted bear.
One other thing I would like to mention...How many bears are wounded but not recovered? I tell you the number is high! But the bear dies in the forest....
We charge our hunters a very big tax for a wounded bear that can't be recovered....

So, if you would like to know a number you should check with your government, but that number is not real...nobody can give you a real number on that.

Hope this helps,
Vlad
