How many Americans go to China to find work?

Apparently there is a "surge", in this NYT article, but I can't find where it mentions how much a "surge" is.

--quote--
“I’ve seen a surge of young people coming to work in China over the last few years,” said Jack Perkowski, founder of Asimco Technologies, one of the largest automotive parts companies in China.

Can anybody find stats?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Americans tend to go to China, work for a couple months and come back. Outsourcing is very useful there, and having a head of office to train the people working for you is essential.
More and more people are definitely going, but the number still remains relatively low.

From what I can tell, China does not allow immigrants to become Chinese citizens. The best they can do is acquire a long term visa. But most are on a working visa or have Chinese family members (a Chinese spouse for instance)

I've looked but I can't find it.

China must have a "work visa". I wonder if the answer is in finding how many Americans have been approved for work visa's per year?

As far as visas go, there are a ton of different visas, many of them allow work but are not only ment for working people. There is no accurate statistic for this. The only people who could have the statistic would be China as it knows who enters and leaves China, and after knowing how many Americans live in China, it is able to estimate the number of working ones.

In my opinion, if there are 110.000 americans living in China, given that most of them would be in working age (say 80%), I would estimate about 70% of those work so about 70.000 americans are working in China. This is in no way precise but its the best I could come up with

Well, the only statistic I found was the number of Americans living in China:
"
CHINA Beijing 10,000

Guangzhou 3,200

Hong Kong 48,220

Shanghai 2,382

Shenyang 555

Chengdu 800
"
http://www.overseasdigest.com/amcit_nu2.htm

and this statistic is only dated from 1999.
The actual number is extremely hard to pinpoint as the people do not need to register with the embassy...
