How long would it take the sonic boom to reach San Diego from the landing spot of Space Shuttle Atlantis?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The speed of sound at sea level is about 340 meters per second. The Space Shuttle lands at Cape Canaveral, Florida. It is 3517 kilometers between Cape Canaveral and San Diego.

3,517 kilometers = 3,517,000 meters

3,517,000 meters / 340 meters per second = 10,344 seconds = 172 minutes

So, almost 3 hours.

In reality, it would be too quiet to hear from San Diego.
