How long will scotch stay good? In what conditions should I leave the bottle?

I have a bottle of Johnnie Walker Green Label scotch. It was a bit spendy, so I want to save it for special occasions.

I opened the bottle a couple of months ago, and for the most part have just left it in the living room, which generally stays between 60 and 75 degrees. So, two questions:

1. Should I instead leave it in the refrigerator/freezer to make it last longer? Or is it better to leave it in the living room?
2. If I leave it in the living room, how long will it last (as I mentioned, I opened the bottle already)?

Thanks!

Scotch unopened usually has a very long shelf life. However, when exposing it to heat over 70 degrees Fahrenheit could possibly damage the quality of the scotch. It's better to leave it away from any direct sources of heat. If the living room fluctuates over 70 degrees Fahrenheit, then you should keep it out of the living room. I would recommend keeping it in the refrigerator, but you do not need to keep it in the freezer.

It would be best to store it in its original box to keep it away from the sunlight, as light will damage its quality and speed up its deterioration.

Since you already opened the scotch, it's best that you keep the cap closed tightly after pouring the drink, as quickly as you can since the air oxidizes scotch and it will not taste its best.

So, if you leave it in the living room, it's recommended you store it in the box with the cap closed below temperatures of 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If you do that, it will last a long time. Although, according to the temperatures mentioned, I would recommend you store it in the refrigerator to make the scotch last longer and taste better when you're ready to drink it next.

1. Heat is Whiskey's enemy. Store in temperatures less than 70 degrees Fahrenheit / 21 Celsius . Store in cold place
2. Light is bad for Whiskey. Store in a box.
3. Keep liquid away from the cork and lid. Store standing up.
4. Minimize liquids interaction with air.

I'm not an expert on scotch, but this link has some good tips on how to store it: http://www.ehow.com/how_2288617_store-scotch.html

1. eHow states that anything over 70 degrees could harm the scotch, find a slightly cooler room to store it in if you can.

2. eHow also says that a good guideline for scotch is that it will last about a year. However, it also says it will last longer than that if stored properly.

I learned a trick from my granddad. Go and find a Ball mason jar with the flip over seal able lid either in blue or green. Then boil the jar to sterilize it. Put your scotch in it and set it where you like. The colored glass protects from the light and the air tight seal protects from the air. It worked for his bourbon. He stored some well over a year.

Generally scotch can last about a year before you will start to notice change in the taste. Contrary to popular belief, scotch does not age once it has been taken out of the barrel and bottled. Once it has been opened there are two factors now working against that presious nectar and that is exposure to light and oxygen. The longer it is exposed the more the taste is going to be compromised.

So now to specifically answer your question:

1. Putting the scotch in the freezer is not going to make any difference in how long it lasts. It is a matter of personal preference and how you are able to answer these questions:
*Do you have the space in your freezer to accomodate the bottle for a while?
*Do you prefer your drinks cold without the use of ice?

2. You can store the bottle anywhere you like as long as it is somewhere in a dark place. As long as you do so you can enjoy the fresh taste for up to a year, or longer if you dont mind a slightly different taste.

Enjoy!!
