How long will it take for Toyota to regain its place as the most trusted car company on the planet?

Tip for best answer: M$0.80
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

In terms of returning to being the most trusted car company on the planet, I'm not sure that they ever will. People have a way of remembering things. I know of some people that still don't want to buy Hondas because their metal was a little on the thin side back in the 1970s. While I think that returning to the "most trusted" title is nearly impossible though, that doesn't mean they can't continue to be a really great company. You don't have to be number one in trust to have an extremely successful business. Hyundai and Kia aren't known for being number one at anything (at least in my opinion), yet look how well they're doing. There are also companies like Mercedes Benz who sell cars with both good reliability and terrible reliability depending on the model and year of production.

I think as long as Toyota keeps doing what they've been doing after the recall news dies down, everything will still work out pretty well for them.

Toyota’s doing what just about any other auto manufacturer would do in a similar situation — its sending out letters to owners involved in the recall, technicians are hard at work making the actual repairs and dealership service departments are staying open late to handle the extra volume. Sounds like a decent plan, right?
But here’s where I think Toyota is really going the extra mile: In addition to the steps listed above, new car sales of affected models (cars still sitting on the dealer lots) have been temporarily suspended and new car production has completely stopped at some North American plants. Make no mistake, this is huge.
Under normal operating conditions, when an auto assembly line goes idle, even if it’s only for a for a minute or two, the cost to the company is measured in tens of thousands of dollars. Remember, this situation is stretching into the second week…and counting. You can imagine the pressure the engineers must be under to come up with a dependable fix.
Yes, this is a PR nightmare, and yes, Toyota is now in a position where they have to spend countless millions of dollars to fix cars, trucks and SUVs in addition to losing out on new car sales, too; however, is this something that Toyota can’t recover from? Will the company ever regain the trust of the car-buying public?
Of course they will. But it may take some time to heal the wounds. To me, acknowledging the problem, taking full responsibility and the extraordinary action of stopping new car production really shows that they’re doing whatever it takes to make this right — no matter what the cost.
