How long was the trail of tears going to the west?

Tip for best answer: M$0.26
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

According to this article, over 4,000 Cherokee lost their lives as they were marched over 850 miles over two years after being uprooted from their land after the "Indian Removal Act" was passed in 1830. The removal was from 1838 - 39.
Apparently, the government gave them some time to move themselves, but it was their land, so the president sent the troops in and MADE them move.
Below is the article, and man - it's hard reading and disturbing to know these folks were treated so terribly...

Many Native American artists have tried to express this emotional history on canvas. Even painting it is hard!

The Chickasaw, Cherokee, Choctaw , Creek, and Seminole tribes were among the 100,000 Native Americans who were forced to leave their homes and travel on the Trail of tears. Some black slaves were also a part of the trail.

"Beginning in the spring of 1837 and continuing through the fall of 1838, the Cherokee people were rounded up and corralled into hastily constructed stockades. So began the "Trail of Tears," a 1,200 mile journey to unfamiliar land."1

I have also included some maps and wonderful links if you would like to learn more about the subject.
