It depends on weather conditions and geography. On an open plain with a good breeze and vertical mixing, the smoke could clear in a few hours, or even less. In a semi-enclosed basin, with little wind and a temperature inversion trapping smoke near the surface, it might take days for the smoke to disperse. Unfortunately, the foothills around L.A. are usually in the latter category.

The ongoing Station Fire isn't expected to be contained (completely surrounded by fire lines) for nearly two more weeks, and it will take even more time before the fire is completely out. Air quality is likely to fluctuate widely, depending on where the remaining hot spots are and where the wind blows the remaining smoke.

That is a great question. I am not sure if there is an actual answer. But here are some good tips when the air around you is bad because of a fire. Here is the website with a good list. http://www.airquality.org/smokeimpact/ I will try to keep looking for the answer.

I do know it depends on how far away from the fire you live.
