How long should I wait before selecting "best answer"?

In your opinion.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

As soon as you are satisfied with the answer. Or if is a suggestion-type of question that requires as much input as possible, then you can wait till the system asks you to select the best answer which is about 3 days from the time the question was posted.

I think you should always wait until the system asks. After all, you don't know the answer or you wouldn't have asked, so what sounds good may be completely wrong. Giving more time means more chance of someone refuting a wrong answer.

I agree. I usually do that, not only because sometimes I forget and the email reminds me but because I want to give people ample opportunities to answer.

Interesting that you ask. The reverse of this question is going on at this link...
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/mahalo-answers-suggestions/should-there-be-a-minimum-time-a-question-is-open

I suggest you read it and make your own decision. Personally I agree with @csandoval. As soon as you have an answer you like pick it.

Good Luck!

Thanks for pointing me to that question. I think the question you mentioned and this one go hand-in-hand. @passthe40 make sure you see the discussion in http://www.mahalo.com/answers/mahalo-answers-suggestions/should-there-be-a-minimum-time-a-question-is-open for more info.

It depends on the class and number of your answers. If you get one answer, and everybody seems to be rating it helpful and no one else is answering, it is probably a good idea to call it there. However, if there is continuing activity, wait a least several hours until the activity dies down and then answer. Or you can just wait for it to expire naturally, that works too.

Depends on the question.

If you got the information you needed, right away. For example, the other night I asked:
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/zoology/what-type-of-birds-would-be-singing-at-midnight-in-middle-tennessee

Within a few minutes @bbrookin had answered the question and I was positive she was correct, so I closed it.

On other questions, I will let them go until I get a notice to pick a best answer. This allows people a chance to put in their two cents.
