How long is it safe to keep poultry or other meat in the freezer?
At what temperature should I store my meat to provide maximum preservation? What can I add to meat to prolong its shelf life?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi @mmng23!
You can store poultry or other meats in the freezer indefinitely and it will still be safe to consume. The only problem that would occur is that food quality deteriorates the longer it is frozen. In my house, meats could be frozen up to a year before they were thrown out.
In order to freeze properly, you should make sure that your freezer is kept at 0° F. At this temperature, your meats will be frozen safely for as long as you would like to store them.
In terms of quality of frozen meats, you should only freeze poultry for 9-12 months and other meats can be frozen from 4-12 months before the quality of the food is affected.
There is great information about freezing, thawing, and preparing food safely on the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service's website: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/factsheets/focus_on_freezing/index.asp
