How long is it OK to keep hamsters running around in activity balls?

I don't want them to over-exert themselves, but theynever seem to tire.  After 1/2 an hour, I put them back in the cage and they still want to get out.  They don't even take a drink although they maybe they chew on greens.
Tip for best answer: M$2.00

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Well, I actually wrote the page on Mahalo How to Take Care of a Hamster and according to the sources  I found:

1. The Humane Society of the United States says they should never be used because they are "dangerous and stressful for all animals."
2. The National Hamster Council states they can be used but not "for more than a few minutes at a time."
   3. Other sources contend that that, when used correctly, such as for 15 to 20 minutes in areas without stairs, they are perfectly acceptable.

"The Humane Society of the United States says they should never be used because they are 'dangerous and stressful for all animals.'"

But this particular hamster wants to leave the cage and go back into the ball every time, so they clearly can't be that stressful. I remember watching a hamster walk around in one of these and they seemed to be having a good time. When a hamster really gets tired in one of these balls, they will start to move more slowly. When you see the hamster slowing down inside the ball, then you should probably put them back in the cage.

There are some balls that have little water holes so you can pour water in them and give the hamster a treat as it moves around. I recommend getting one of those.

I'm a member of PETA and have had several hamsters. I disagree with the Humane Society's position. While they can be dangerous and stressful if used improperly, in most cases I find the hamster enjoys them. However, when I wrote the article, I felt that it was important to include both sides of the issue.
