The company that would become Jaguar Cars and eventually Land Rover Jaguar began life as the Swallow Sidecar Company on September 11, 1922. It was founded by Sir William Lyons for the purpose of manufacturing sidecars for motorcycles. The first Jaguar to be related with the company was the SS Jaguar saloon car produced in 1935.
The name was changed to Jaguar Cars Limited on April 9th 1945. The change was prompted because of the association of the word "SS" with Adolf Hitler's notoriously ruthless forces which shard the same initials. Jaguar would make its name by producing some of the best known British sports cars of the 40's and 50's. The company would change hands several times, first going to British Leyland in 1968, Ford in 1990, and finally to the Indian company Tata Motors. During its time in Ford, it was paired with Land Rover to form the Land Rover Jaguar Division, which was sold whole to Tata Motors in 2008.
