How long does it take to learn a language?

I want to learn French but I'm not sure if I have the time. How many hours a week should I spend learning?
Tip for best answer: M$1.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

Learning any language with a tutor or in a classroom setting certainly takes a while, depending on how many hours and how much effort you put into the work. Learning French could take you anywhere from 6 months to a few years. However, doing an exchange program or living in France, perhaps, is a great idea because you are prone to learn the language faster by being around it. You should put as many hours of study as you can fit in order to achieve fluency.

It would certainly depend on the level you'd like to learn the language. Learning simple phrases still requires vocabulary studying and frequent use to get it ingrained in memory. If you take a college level class you may be able to learn within a few years, but frequent usage around natural speakers is usually still neccessary for fluency.

it really depends with languages, if you are using the language often it can be anywhere from 6-12 months to be fluent if its just as a hobby it could be more like 6 years to be fluent, with the right methods you can learn a language in a year to a reasonable level - depending on your ability to learn it, in terms of hours a week id definitely say a minimum of 6-10 hours increasing upwards if you have the time, the more you put in the quicker you'll learn
