How long does it take to get a weave?
Can I do a weave myself or should I go to the salon to get it professionally done? Is a weave just like hair extensions?

I would suggest going to a salon to get a weave done. It would be very hard to do a weave yourself, especially if you have not had training. If you want to see how your hair will look longer, prior to extensions, you can buy an extensions clip or ponytail or even buy a wig.
If you decide you like your hair long, do go to a salon. How long it will take depends on your hair. A ballpark idea is anywhere between 1 1/2 hours to 3 hours. I had hair extensions put in many years ago, and it took almost 3 hours. I do have thick hair and it was very short at the time.
The one thing I did not like is you can not comb or brush your hair as you used to. The weave or extensions are put in at the roots, near the scalp. So combing hair can be irritating.
