How long does it take for a non-Jew to convert to Judaism?

I have heard that it might take a long time before a non-Jew is accepted into the Jewish circle, but I am not so sure about that. A friend of mine really fancies the religion and wants to know what it takes to be converted. She also asked if any convert can serve in the IDF. If yes, can people of all ages serve?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Converting to Judaism is not a matter of saying so and then being accepted. It is a course of study. How long it took would depend upon the Rabbi you are studying with, and how hard you study. A typical estimate is 6 months to a year.

This question is in the Orthodox Judaism section, but one can also convert to Conservative or to Reform Judaism. These can take less time; but, are similarly courses of study.

A convert can join the IDF; but, there are age limits for foreign volunteers:
age brackets 18-23 incl. (men), 18-20 incl. (women), physicians until 35 incl.

If you convert, move to Israel, and become a citizen and live there for a while, you may be eligible for other programs that might allow later entry.

At least one year to convert because one requirement is to experience all the Yom Tov (holidays). The longer the better because you will have easier to acclimating to Judaism. It took me six years to get to the conversion process and I don't regret it. The Rabbi's say run away from the other false religion and come slowly to Judaism. You will have a much better understanding and deeper connection to Judaism. Orthodox Judaism is the only Torah legal way to covert. Orthodox is only conversion recognized in Israel. You can serve in the IDF and go through the conversion process them. Aish.com is good source for Torah.

Conversion to Judaism is a long process. More than year or so and it depends on which type. Chabadist is often the the most commitment but is also liberal.
It is based on the fact that everyone is jewish and you are baal teshuvah, or returnee.
The first thing is committing to the laws, taking on the 613 laws and following them. From there it is living the Jewish life.
Chabadists do not have certificates, celebrations. offical anything. Just acceptance.
