According to Wikipedia, there are about 372 species in the order Psittaciformes. These are subdivided into three families: Psittacdiae (true parrots), Cacatuidae, (cockatoos) and Strigopidae (New Zealand parrots). I never knew that! Parrots are considered one of the most intelligent species of bird; able to mimic human voices and other sounds that they hear.
Parrots, in the wild, can be found in the tropical and sub-tropical climates but most come from Australis and South America. The smallest parrot is the Buff-faced Pygmy Parrot who only weight 0.35 oz and is 3.2 in. in length. That’s tiny!
Because of their popularity as pets, there are many species that are threatened or endangered. Please, if you are going to purchase a parrot, make sure you get one that has been captive bred. You also want to look for a bird that has been hand fed which helps ensure that it will be tame and trusting of humans.
Larger birds, like the cockatoo, Amazon and macaws can live about 80 years in captivity. Because of this, many people provide for them in their wills to be sure that the birds are taken care of when they die. Small parrots like the lovebird, hanging parrot and budgie (parakeet) can live for up to 20 years (on average).
You may have seen this already as it was very popular for a while but it’s my absolute favorite and I never get tired of it! Snowball the cockatoo rocking out to the Back Street Boys:

Here’s a great video as well! I giggle every time I watch it! Polly the parrot dancing to Willow Smith’s ‘Whip Ma Hair’:

You can see by the videos that both of these birds are clearly enjoying themselves. It’s easy to see why so many people can form such a close bond with their parrots!
