Gerbils are a good first pet for kids and/or young teens. They do not require a lot of attention and are relatively easy to care for. The number one issue that needs to be attended to is the cleaning of the cage. This will extend the life of the animal by it not sitting in filth. Fresh water and food are also just as important as the clean cage. Gerbils are a good first pet to teach responsibility without being over burdensome for kids involved in extracurricular activities.
The lifespan of gerbils is usually between two to three years. There have been rare cases where they have lived for eight years. The length of time the animal will live depends largely on how well they are taken care of and if was exposed to any diseases like Tyzzer’s Disease.
