Construction on the Great Wall of China, however, first began in 7th century B.C. In 221 B.C., the first emperor of Qin Dynasty linked the walls of the three states in the north and formed the first "Wan Li Chang Cheng" (ten thousand li Great Wall, 2li = 1km).
Since that time, there has been rebuilding, modification and extending of the Great Wall for over 2,000 years. If you include all of the walls built in different dynasties, the total length exceeds 50,000 kilometers, or 31,068 miles.
