M$During his time at Pembroke, Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and the first two volumes of The Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit was written for his children but later published in 1939 as a Children’s book. He intended for the Lord of the Rings to also be a children’s story but the events leading to World War Two and eventually the war itself troubled Tolkien and his epic took a more adult and dark turn. He originally published The Lord of the Rings in three volumes from 1954–1955. It took a total of 12 years to finish his epic. Although it was actually finished in 1949, it took time to create the maps, drawing and appendices for the epic.
