How is trans fat bad for you?

Lots of foods mention "No Trans Fat". Only within these past few years have trans fat been heavily avoided. How is it bad for you?

In 2006 in the New England Journal of Medicine reported trans fat consumption increases the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD).

A study published in Archives of Neurology in February 2003 suggested that the intake of both trans fats and saturated fats promote the development of Alzheimer disease.

French part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition suggested an increased intake of trans-fatty acids may raise the risk of breast cancer by 75%.

Research suggested trans fat may increase weight gain and abdominal fat more than other similar caloric intake. A 6-year experiment revealed that monkeys fed a trans-fat diet gained 7.2% of their body weight, as compared to 1.8% for monkeys on a mono-unsaturated fat diet.

One 2007 study found trans fat may increase the risk of Infertility in women.

Trans fat which are either found in an animal fat or partially hydrogenated fat when included in diet tend to raise a persons LDL or low density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol. A high LDL is associated with increased in risk of heart disease.

Trans Fats has been linked to many health risks

It seems more research is needed on the subject of trans fats, (as you noted above) the effects of trans fats have only be studied recently. It seems (as of now) most studies note that limiting the amount of trans fats in your diet is good, but moderation of trans fats in your diet is not harmful.
