A basil thermometer is super sensitive and accurate. It is able to track the tiniest change in body temperature. This is a very important feature if you're planning to track temperature changes as a method of conceiving.

There are two major types of basil thermometers, the older style glass ones and digital basil thermometers.

Digital basil thermometers are good to go, glass thermometers have to be shaken down before being used. Glass thermometers are fairly easy to break so before you begin shaking make sure there's nothing around you that you might hit with the thermometer. To shake down your thermometer, firmly hold the part of the thermometer in your hand that doesn't go in your mouth. Point the bit that goes into your mouth towards the ground. Shake it in a downward motion using quick wrist flicking action. Once the thermometer has been shaken down to below 94 degrees you're good to go.

You have the choice of taking your temperature orally, rectally or vaginally. The important thing about where you take your temperature at is that there will be a slight variation depending upon the place you decide to take your temperature. If you're tracking your temperature for medical reasons or to pinpoint ovulation you will want to use the same method each time.

Insert the thermometer and wait for a beep if you're using a digital thermometer or three minutes if you're using a glass thermometer.

Here is a beautiful page maintained here in Mahalo about how to use Basal thermometers. Here are some of the synopsis of info taken from that page.

---quote----
Basal thermometers are highly sensitive thermometers that are used to measure basal body temperature. They are often used for charting a woman's fertility cycle.

When charting for fertility, the temperature should be taken when first waking up, before showering or even leaving the bed. Any activities might throw off the results. Try and take the temperature the same time everyday throughout the month and keep record of the temperatures.

Mark off days that you were sick or did not sleep normally as these situations may alter the basal body temperature. Chart the temperatures on some graph paper. Generally there should be two levels, a lower temperature during menstruation which continues to gradually increase until the middle of the cycle and then jumps the day after ovulation. The temperature should stay high until the next menstruation. Chart for several cycles until the general range of ovulation is known.
