Arborvitae is a wonderful plant. Not only is it a fantastic plant for creating natural fences or decorative hedges, but it is also a food source for deer and other animals. My friend up in Vermont has several walls of the plant, and it brings deer and other small mammals into the backyard. It is also a very "kid friendly" plant, as it is soft to the touch. Many other shrubs or trees used for hedges are not so kind.
If you plan on growing some arborvitae, keep in mind that they thrive in alkaline (basic) soil pH. There are ways to augment your soil if it is pH neutral or acidic, so check with the garden store where you are buying the arborvitae as they would know what is best for that specific plant.
