How is religion sexist?
Is there a book that compares the treatment of women in different religious works? Is there a religion that has a female god?

This answer is in part my opinion.
Some people claim religion is sexist because many of the world’s religions are based around male figures and have only males as high ranking clergy workers. The majority of religions are based around a male God figure. While many religions have important female figures (Virgin Mary, Martha, Sarah etc.), those women usually play minor roles in religious works.
It should be noted that while women usually play minor roles in religious texts, they are often respected, revered, blessed and treated as special people. I’ve never read a religious book in which women aren’t respected.
Followers of Wicca believe in the existence of a female God. There are also other, smaller religions and religious movements, both modern and ancient, which believe in a singular female goddess (Fellowship of Isis).

Some currents of Neopaganism, in particular Wicca, have a ditheistic concept of a single goddess and a single god, who in hieros gamos represent a united whole.

I found this book on Amazon.com that talks about the female roles, expectations and challenges of tradition in various religions: http://www.amazon.com/Taking-Back-God-Religious-ebook/dp/B003H4I4KY.
