How is general orbit achieved by a communications satellite ?

Can you explain in layman's terms how orbit is achieved by a communications satellite, or any satellite for that matter ?

How does the satellite stay in geo synchronized orbit ?

I'm trying to wrap my head around it but im having a hard time with it.
