Bellatrix LeStrange and Narcissa Malfoy are cousins of Sirius Black. Lucius Malfoy is Black’s cousin by marriage. Those facts are first described in the book Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix. The relationship between Bellatrix and Narcissa is mentioned again in the sixth and seventh books of the series. Narcissa, Bellatrix, Sirius and Lucius are from families known as pure bloods. A pure blood is a wizard who is from a family tree only consisting of wizards (as opposed to half bloods and muggles or mud bloods.)

This willingness to associate with wizards who aren’t pure bloods resulted in his being burned out of his family tree. Bellatrix saw that Sirius was protecting Harry and as a result of her hatred for both Harry and Sirius, she had no problem killing Sirius.
